Eddy current testing is the best way to inspect condensers in various industries where condensers are used.
The method of Eddy current testing in condenser tubes is useful to detect various discontinuity as you will know in detail down here.
In this article, I will discuss what is condensers and later on the procedure to inspect eddy current testing of condenser tube.
This article is going to be a complete guide about the topic, you clicked for.
So, Come with me and Grab your comfortable seat to ride a knowledgeable journey in Engineers Rail.
Before you start, I request you to go and read a complete detailed guide on Eddy current testing, Then come back, this will help you to get upcoming terms more easily and comfortably.
Let’s get started…
What is Condenser?
The condenser is a type of heat exchanger, where gaseous substances are compressed into a liquid state using a cooling technique and latent heat is released in the environment, known as a condenser.
In general, A cooling device used in condensing gaseous or vapour state substances into a liquid state, Known as a condenser.
Although, The process of changing high-temperature vapour into low-temperature liquid, is known as condensation.
These condensers are used in thermal power plants and also in refrigeration systems.
These were some basic information about condensers, which may be beneficial to you before heading to the topic. Now, I am moving to the mainstream of the article. Read In-depth About Condenser.

Eddy Current Testing of Condenser Tubes-
When we talk about condensers testing, Eddy current testing is the most favourable NDT method, due to the flexibility of operation during the test.
As you know, Eddy current testing uses eddy current variation to detect any discontinuity in the specimen. where, Due to this testing method, we can able to detect cracks, corrosion, pitting in condenser tubes.
In the testing procedure, Absolute probes are used to perform the inspection, with long and flexible wire to insert properly in the tubes of the condenser.
Now, let’s jump to the procedure of performing tests in condenser tubes.
Procedure of Eddy current testing of condenser tubes-
Here is the procedure for performing eddy current testing in tubes. Here are they-
The basic steps are–
- Setting up testing equipment
- Insertion of Probe
- Analyzing result
1. Setting up testing equipment-
First and foremost, Eddy current testing equipment like display and probes are connected to each other to establish an uninterrupted connection and data transmission between them.
Now, this equipment will be calibrated to check, whether they are working properly or not, to prevent any further misinterpretation during the test.
Calibration can be done with a sample test object through the same probe and display, which is decided to use in condenser tube testing.
3. Insertion of Probe–
After completing these basic steps, now it’s time to head to the main step of the testing, where the absolute probe is inserted into the tube of the condenser.
This step is performed one by one means one tube at a time. The probe is inserted into the probe to the end of the tube, then note the test result of the specific tube and further moved to the other tubes in the same way.
These steps are pretty quick and can be done considerably in less amount of time.
4. Analyzing Results-
Now, The final step is to summarize and analyze the various results of condenser tubes and submit them to the client ends along with a detailed report.

These were some basic steps considered during the testing of condenser tubes through eddy current testing.
Eddy current testing is fairly used in various industries as well as testing of various tubes like condenser tubes, which is discussed in this article.

Before you go, Here are some Q&A sections regarding the title of the article. You may consider looking at these too.
Q. Can condenser tubes inspect with other NDT methods?
Ans. It may be, But getting the thorough out details regarding the tube condition, Eddy current testing is the best NDT method as far as tube inspection is concerned.
Q. How reliable is the result is, testing of condenser tube through Eddy current testing?
Ans. There should not be any reliability issue regarding testing tubes through eddy current. ECT is considered the best NDT method among the other NDT methods available.
Q. does testing of condenser tubes raises efficiency overall?
Ans. Yes, It raises the overall efficiency of condenser tubes. As you know, any kind of discontinuity decreases the performance of the condenser tube, Hence, Identifying flaws and repairing those flaws, absolutely raises efficiency overall.
Q. What if any tube of condenser got defects?
Ans. If any condenser tube got defected, then identifying and repairing those defects can be done to maintain the performance of tubes.
Q. What should be the frequency of eddy current testing during testing tubes?
Ans. The Frequency range of eddy current testing should be from 100Hz to 4MHz.
Q. Name of those industries, where tube testing is done through Eddy current?
Ans. Eddy current testing of tubes is done in various industries. Some of those industries are-
- Chemical Industries
- Gas Pipelines
- Air conditioning systems
- Refrigeration systems etc
