Single Point Cutting Tool: Definition, Nomenclature, Advantages and Applications|PDF|

A cutting tool is a wedge-shaped tool used to remove surplus material from a constructed area in order to obtain the appropriate form, size, and precision.

The cutter forces a thin layer of material into the workpiece and slices it gently during machining or metal cutting.

Just Kidding!!

So, I invite you to come along with me and let me get the party started.

Here, I’d want to give you a gift: at the completion of the post, you may download the whole article as a pdf.

Cutting Tools Types-

There are three types of cutting tools. They are-

Here you will know about Single point cutting tool. So, here I go…

Single Point cutting tool Definition-

A single-point cutting tool, sometimes known as a single-point cutter, is a type of cutting tool or cutter that removes material with only one cutting edge during a single stroke of movement.

When a single-point metal cutting tool is passed over a workpiece, just one edge or point of the tool will come into contact with the workpiece, allowing it to cut or remove material in the form of chips.

Examples include turning, facing, slotting, planning, and contouring. This tool is used in lathes and shapers.

Material Used for Single Point Cutting Tools-

In machine tools, single-point cutting tools are the most common and widely used tool. Machining a workpiece at high speeds is not a simple process; if the cutting tools are not constructed appropriately, they may fail.

The materials needed to make the single-point cutting tool are listed below. They’re –

  • High Carbon Steel

  • High-Speed Steel

  • Ceramic

  • Diamond

  • Cast Hard Alloys

  • Cemented Carbides

  • Cubic Boron Nitride

Single-point cutting tool nomenclature-

A single point cutting tool consists of a sharpened cutting part and the shank and main parts or elements which are:

  • Shank
  • Flank
  • Face
  • Heel
  • Nose
  • Noise Radius
  • Cutting Edge

1. Shank-

It is the tool’s main structure.

2. Flank-

The flank of the tool refers to the surface or surfaces below the next to the cutting edge.

3. Face-

The face of the tool is the surface on which the chip slides.

4. Heel-

It’s the point where the tool’s flank and base meet.

5. Nose-

It’s where the side and end cutting edges intersect.

6. Nose Radius-

With a sharp tip on the nose, the nose radius will ensure extended life and a nice finish.

7. Cutting Edge-

Grinding is done to prepare the cutting edges. The tool’s edge on the face removes the material from the workpiece.

The tool cutting edge is made up of two parts: a side cutting edge and an end cutting edge.
