What is Split Rivet?
Split rivet is a type of rivet with a head and two splited legs and materials such as leather, plastic, and wood are joined through a rivet, called a Split rivet. This rivet is also known as Bifurcated Rivet.
Due to the splitting of the leg into two parts, it is used to be called Split or Bifurcated Rivet.
Types of Split Rivet-
There are several types of Bifurcated Rivet based on the material used to manufacture this rivet and these are-
- Brass Split Rivet
- Copper split Rivet
- Aluminium Split Rivet
- Stainless Steel Split Rivet
Brass Split Rivet-
As the name indicates, this rivet is made up of Brass. The malleability of brass makes this type of rivet perfect to use in soft materials.
Copper split Rivet-
Another common type of split rivet is made up of copper. Due to its anti-corrosion properties, this rivet gives a long life span and endurance.
It is used in roofing, plumbing, Industries Machinery and also in musical instruments.
Aluminium Split Rivet-
Another type of Bifurcated Rivet is made up of Aluminium. The key feature of this rivet is soft and malleable, light and durable, and most important non-corrosive.
Due to being soft and malleable, the finishing of the riveting area is greatly enhanced and increases the durability of riveted material.
Stainless Steel Split Rivet-
Those rivets are made up of stainless steel, known as stainless steel split rivets. These rivets are used basically in leather materials where an attractive appearance is needed.
These rivets are free from corrosion, very durable and have high tensile strength.
How do Split rivet works?
When this rivet is inserted into the riveting material, splited legs of the tail in expanded with the help of the riveting tool and thus it clamps into the material by on it.
As this rivet is divided into two parts from the tail end, it works as a holding device for soft materials as it clamps the material and does not let the joining loose after riveting.
Bifurcated Rivet is also known for its finishing capacity.
How to use or Install Split rivets?
Installing Bifurcated Rivet is a very easy and comfortable process, which is discussed below step by step. First thing first, you need some of these instruments to install this rivet effortlessly and these are-
- Bucking Bar
- Screw Driver
- And of course a Hammer
After gathering these instruments, now let’s head on to How to Use and Set Split Rivet–
- First, make a hole between two layers or where the rivet is decided to apply, using a hole-making plier.
- Make sure to not exceed the diameter of the hole more than the diameter of the rivet.
- Now, place the rivet inside the hole and place the head of the rivet on the Bucking bar to support from behind while hammering.
- Placement of the washer to the back of the rivet is recommended for better gripping and endurance, also washer prevents the rivet to come out.
- Now, spread the leg with the help of a screwdriver.
- Here the final step is to hammer on the spread leg of the rivet to make them stick with the surface of the material and also with the washer.
