Shaper Machine: Definition, Types, Parts, Working, Operations and More

Hello Folk…

This is Abhishek, welcomes you to Engineers Rail- The number one portal for all your engineering queries.

Today, I am going to discuss shaper machine including their definition, working, Types of shaper machine, operations and further pros and cons, and more down the road.

So, Seat back and relax and scroll gently while I take you to the mainstream…

let’s Hop-In…

What is Shaper Machine?

It is a metal cutting machine which uses the relative motion between the workpiece and cutting tool and further cut the workpiece using relative linear motion on the linear path, is known as a shaper machine.

This shaper machine is a reciprocating type of machine used to manufacture various metal surfaces such as horizontal, flat, and vertical.

Types of Shaper Machines-

The types of shaper machines are classified on the basis of driving mechanism-

Here is the detailed article on the various types of shaper machines classified based on the driving mechanism, Follow the link to know…

Parts of Shaper Machine-

  1. Base
  2. Column
  3. Guide Ways
  4. sliding Support
  5. Vice Mechanism
  6. Ram
  7. Ram Clamp
  8. Tool Head
  9. Tool feed Handle
  10. Tool Post

1. Base-

The base is made up of cast iron attached to the concrete base at the bottom.

2. Column-

The column consists of all gear arrangements inside including pulleys, drive mechanism including quick return mechanism.

Overall, It basically provides housing to all the mechanisms inside.

3. Guide Ways-

There are two guideways installed in the shaper machine, one is vertical and another one is horizontal.

Vertical guideways basically move the table forward and backward.

And, Horizontal guideways basically move the Ram into forward and backward motion.

4. Sliding Support-

It helps to slide the table smoothly when the table is being moved.

5. Vice Mechanism-

This mechanism helps to hold the workpiece and further tighten it. This wise mechanism consists of a fixed jaw and a movable jaw.

These jaws help to clamp any size of the workpiece.

6. Ram-

Ram is a movable mechanism supported with a quick return mechanism, This ram arrangement can be moved forward and backward direction.

7. Ram Clamp-

This clamp is used to position the ram as per need or desire.

8. Tool Head-

This tool head can be moved up and down or can be rotated at any angle or any inclined position as per need.

This tool head is also known as a vertical slide.

9. Tool Feed Handle-

The tool feed handle helps to feed the tool upward and downward.

10. Tool Post-

The tool post helps to hold the single-point cutting tool and further tighten it.

Working of Shaper Machine-

The workpiece is held through a vice mechanism and further, the cutting tool is on the tool post.

when the ram starts to move in the reciprocating motion, the single-point cutting tool slides on the workpiece and further cuts the surface accordingly.

The table also moves forward and backward to support the cutting process. So, no need to move the workpiece.

The forward stroke of the ram cuts the job and the backward stroke goes blank with a quick return mechanism.

This is how the shaper machine works.

Operations of Shaper Machine-

There are mainly four operations held on the shaper machine and there are-

  1. Machining Horizontal Surface
  2. Machining of Vertical Surfaces
  3. Machining of Inclined Surfaces
  4. Machining of Irregular Surfaces

1. Machining Horizontal Surface-

When the shaper machine cuts the horizontal surface with a forward stroke with the help of a cutting tool, known as a horizontal surface machining operation on the shaper machine.

2. Machining of Vertical Surfaces-

When the vertical surface is machined via a shaper machine cutting tool with a forward stroke, known as vertical surface machining on the shaper.

3. Machining of Inclined Surfaces-

When the tool head is tilted at the desired angle, a desired angle of the cutting tool is created and further material removal can be done in the inclined or angular position with the help of a shaper machine, known as machining of inclined surfaces.

4. Machining of Irregular Surfaces-

Machining of irregular surfaces can be done with the help of a shaper machine using the round-nose cutting tool by adjusting the workpiece manually.

Advantages of Shaper Machine-

  1. Cheaper than other cutting machines
  2. Precise cutting can be done
  3. Holding the workpiece is much easier than others in a shaper machine
  4. Easy to operate
  5. Changing the workpiece is so easy and quick.
  6. Multiple cutting operations can be performed with the help of this machine

Disadvantages of Shaper Machine-

  1. Slow cutting process
  2. Slow cutting speed
  3. single point cutting tool machine

Applications of Shaper Machine-

  1. Splines manufacturing
  2. To make Mechanical keys, Gear teeth, flat, incline, and angular surfaces
