A shaper machine is a reciprocating type machine tool that removes material from the workpiece solely in the forward stroke with the use of a single-point cutting tool and has an optimum return stroke.

Shaper machines are divided into several groups based on the driving mechanism, the ram travel, the table design, and the cutting stroke. So, here they are:

On the basis of the driving mechanism-

Using the crank mechanism and the Bull gear, the rotary motion of the motor is transformed into the reciprocatory action of the ram.

This is the most popular sort of shaper machine, in which metal is removed while forward movement of the ram.

This sort of shaper machine is the polar opposite of a push cut shaper machine, in which metal is removed backwards due to the tool head being fixed in the opposite direction.
